A little different this time. Don't know if you got this, but they are thinking about updating the school calendar for next year.
As many of you may have heard, MGSD is considering proposing a Non-Traditional calendar to the Board of Education for the 2019 - 2020 school year. Both Traditional and Non-traditional calendar links can be found below for your review. Please note that in reviewing the non-traditional calendar, the purple days are non-working days for 10-month employees. Also note that there is one week off between 1st and 2nd quarter, as well as 3rd and 4th quarter; however, there is not a designated work day between quarters.
A few items to consider when deciding which calendar you prefer:
- The non-traditional calendar more closely aligns with post-secondary institutions allowing high school students to graduate early and enroll in college for the spring semester. This alignment is also helpful to MHS students taking Mitchell Community College courses while in high school.
- Students involved in fall extra-curricular activities such as marching band and athletics already begin these activities around the beginning of August.
- First semester would end prior to winter break.
- More shorter breaks throughout the year allow for student retention of material between sessions.
- Week long breaks in both fall and spring allow for family vacations during cooler, off-peak seasons.
- Iredell-Statesville Schools has approved a calendar very similar to our DRAFT Non-Traditional Calendar
- The first summer (2019) transitioning to a new non-traditional calendar will be short with school ending for students on June 7, 2019, and beginning on August 6, 2019.
